LDF Consultation Report March 2010

E-mail Print PDF

Sustainable Seaton attended a consultation event led by EDDC as part of their preparatory work towards the Local Development Framework for 2026.

The mainly up-beat event was hosted in the form of a conversation café, with community members split into six random groups seated around six tables. Topics covered included education, transport, environment, economy and housing.

Highlights from the discussions were shared by means of a spokesperson from EDDC, and members of the groups were then invited to write a postcard from Seaton as it will be in 2026. A mix of negative and positive mail was then posted into a box for EDDC officers to read.

The event drew to a close with groups using a map of Seaton to capture their aspirations and show their preferred land use.

 Several overwhelmingly unanimous suggestions included:

  • Pedestrianisation of the sea front between Beach Road and the roundabout.

  • capitalising on the town’s natural assets by promotion of green tourism, with more tourism land, cycle facilities, more integrated public transport including cycle racks on busses.

Members can complete their own questionnaire by visiting the EDDC website.

EDDC is in keen pursuit of cutting costs, so it remains to be seen if any of the ideas will incorporated within the LDF.

  2. Apologies: None.

  3. Matters since last meeting: * Julia is happy to assist with links and website. Graham is able to make links though and explained how. Sarah and Claire to meet with Julia.

  4. Finance © £1426.57 in bank account.

  5. Table top competition: Members brought objects for use within the tyre garden, and items were arranged. Members have additional items to bring along on the day – including turf etc. The entry form was completed and it was agreed to meet on the day at 2-30pm to create the entry at the Town Hall.

  6. Green Transport Gathering: Competition ideas were discussed – incorporating ‘40’. Prizes for the children were discussed. Seeds? Paper aeroplane race? Other ideas. Barbara is to speak to Senior Council. Entries are to be invited.

  7. New Flyers/membership forms etc: A non guilt theme is preferred – with positive action! It is hoped that we can link it in with the website rather than duplicating work!

  8. Meeting times? For a trial, meetings are to be held during the day. This would enable the Community Centre to be open, and negate the need for Sarah to employ a babysitter. It also means that members are not travelling from meetings in the dark.

  9. Next meeting 17th March 2010, 1pm till 3pm.

Charging Points

juice

Having spoken to many of the exhibitors at the Green Transport Rally, there were many requests for electric vehicle charging points in Seaton.  We had a large number of electric cycles present at the event, but for electric cars or bicycles to become a practical option, it is essential that charging points are made available.  It is an excellent opportunity for Devon to lead the way in sustainable personal transport options, and would assist the area to become an eco-tourism destination.

If you would like to help us to try and prove a need for an electric charging point, please contact us, and we will tell you how you can help further this vital change. Email: info@sustainableseaton.com
