SEATON AND THE FUTURE:
SUSTAINABLE SEATON A TRANSITION TOWN

What is a Transition Town?
As we all know, 'Transition' means:  'the process of changing from one condition to another'.  What impact will the ever increasing price of oil have upon our lives?  How prepared will Seaton be when oil is not so readily available?   How will we get around, stay warm, stay healthy, source food?  Imagine the changes this could mean for Seaton.  If we have vision and plan for these events, then we can create a positive outcome.

Economic collapse would be painful...
Environmental collapse would be a disaster!

All Local development plans, community plans & government plans
are based on the assumption that climate change won't happen for ages
and oil prices will remain cheap - Such assumptions are questionable.
Rises in prices are happening now!

Transition Town status is a very positive and fast growing reaction to planetary destruction that is taking place in the modern world.  It will assist the Government to meet environmental targets; help re-build communities, provide local employment, promote health and well-being, as well as cutting down on CO2 emissions etc.  It gleans the best of the modern and combines it with the good practice from the past.
It endeavours to re-cycle, re-use and localise where ever possible.
We strive for a way of life that is more resilient, more fulfilling and more equitable, with a dramatically lower level of carbon emissions.

The big transition from a society dependant on oil, addicted to oil, to a future with less dependency.

How will it be?
How will we cope?
What will still be the same?

The 'Transition Town' process is a catalyst for getting people to think about the impending problems so that we can where possible pre-empt and find solutions.

It is about infastructure, economics, livelihoods,
education, health, transport, tourism,
building construction and government etc

It needs to involve everyone.  No matter what your line/trade or skill, there is a need for your input.

So many unknown issues ahead of us
BUT
It can be seen in a positive light
It is about trying to apply the best of the old
and the best of the new
It doesn't have to mean 'back to basics' with
composting toilets and straw in our hair!
(though great if you want to tread even lighter on the planet!)

What was it like between 1930 and 1950 in Seaton?
Where did the food come from?
Where did people work?
How did they keep warm?
Can we learn anything from this period?
Was there a resilience in our community?
